Bankruptcy on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart
As a Jacksonville, Daytona and Orlando bankruptcy attorney, I am always on the look-out for issues concerning bankruptcy and middle-class families that pop up in the media. Last night, Elizabeth Warren, a bankruptcy law expert from Rutgers School of Law, appeared on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart. After commenting on how she thought Tom Brady and the Patriots were going to “spank the Giants” in the Super Bowl, she went on to talk about how middle-class families are falling behind more and more every day. Elizabeth Warren is the former Special Advisor for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and served as Chair of the Congressional Oversight Panel in the wake of the 2008-11 financial crisis. She has also been named one of the National Law Journal's 50 Most Influential Women Attorneys in America.
Ms. Warren listed different reasons why families are falling behind explaining that it is “more expensive” to be considered middle-class now as opposed to 50 years ago. Ms. Warren further explained that economic trends are cyclical and that those who find themselves in a position where they are considering bankruptcy need not be ashamed. It is often true that families who find themselves considering bankruptcy are doing so because of no fault of their own. Companies go out business and lay people off. People can randomly get sick or injured causing loss of wages and skyrocketing medical bills. Divorce can occur often leaving one spouse “holding the bag.”
